WOW Air - Fly low-Cost from London Gatwick to Boston and Baltimore/Washington via Reykjavik

There will be two ways to get from the UK to the USA via Iceland from March 2015 when low-cost airline WOW Air launches service to Boston (BOS) and Baltimore/Washington (BWI).

Iceland has long been a transit option for those seeking a cheaper flight or a quick break-of-journey in the Reykjavik area. Icelandair offer flights from London Gatwick, London Heathrow and various regional airports to Keflavik airport with onward connections to a number of US cities; including New York JFK and even Anchorage, Alaska.

Icelandair has some cheap fares at some times of the year, particularly during the summer and can be very cheap if you include  a stopover of more than 24 hours. I assume that might be because you only pay for short-haul APD from UK that way? Of course the cheaper fair is irrelevant unless you particularly want to visit Iceland as you'll end up paying more for a hotel than the saving on the flight.

Step in Iceland's other airline WOW Air. This low-cost airline recently announced flights between Reykjavik Keflavik and two destinations in the USA - Boston and Baltimore.

As usual for a low-cost airline the headline fare seems cheap, but once you add in bag fees and other 'optional' fees for items that are pretty essential for long flights, you'll probably end up paying about the same as for a direct flight on a major carrier.

Unless you find an amazing deal and don't mind crossing the Atlantic with hand-baggage only (it's doable, I've done it twice), WOW Air from the UK to the USA is unlikely to be worth considering.
